What are Sunspots?

Sunspots are regions on the Sun's visible surface where gases have become "trapped" by magnetic fields. These areas can cool down by thousands of degrees and appear dark compared with neighboring, hotter gases.

The number of sunspots visible on the solar surface varies from maximum to minimum and back again over an average period of 11 years, hence the term "sunspot cycle."
