Gorilla Behavior
Question:
Why does a gorilla pound its chest?
Answer:
Can you think of a better way to kill fleas? Have you ever tried
it for the congestion brought on by a cold? Is there a more effective
way of getting everyone's attention at a party? It sure beats
yelling "here" when someone is checking attendance.
It may shock you, but the gorilla's reason
is none of the above. He -- less often she -- is sending a message
to other gorillas. And what's the message? A male might be declaring
dominance over a group of females. It could also express anger
or several other emotions. It depends on the context and what
other gestures accompany the thumping. If it's directed your
way, the ape may just be trying to make a monkey out of you.
