Gorilla Behavior Question: Why does a gorilla pound its chest? Answer: Can you think of a better way to kill fleas? Have you ever tried it for the congestion brought on by a cold? Is there a more effective way of getting everyone's attention at a party? It sure beats yelling "here" when someone is checking attendance. It may shock you, but the gorilla's reason is none of the above. He -- less often she -- is sending a message to other gorillas. And what's the message? A male might be declaring dominance over a group of females. It could also express anger or several other emotions. It depends on the context and what other gestures accompany the thumping.
