Majid Majidi, Iranian Film Director
Wins Montreal Film Kudos For Third Time
Iranian director Majid Majidi scored an unprecedented Grand Prix hat trick at the Montreal World Film Festival on September 3, picking up his third consecutive Grand Prix of the Americas for best film.
The film that brought him the prize is called Baran (The Rain) a tale of Afghan refugees in Iran. Majidi shared the honor with Abandoned (Torzok), a grim autobiographical story of childhood from Hungarian director Arpad Sopsits.
Majidi won the Grand Prix for Rang-e Behesht (The Colour of Paradise) in 1999 and Bachehay-e Aseman (The Children of Heaven) in 1997, which went on to garner an Oscar nomination. One of Iran's best-known filmmakers, his pictures have done solid art-house business around the world.
The awards for the Montreal World Film Festival were handed out at a ceremony in Montreal. The fest had started Aug. 23.
