Pluto's Picture
The Most Distant Planet of Solar System

Pluto(L) and its moon Charon are seen from a distance of 4.1 billion kilometers from earth in this image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope February 21, 1994. The National Research Council urged NASA on July 11, 2002 to make exploration of the solar system's most mysterious planet a top priority, even though the latest federal budget eliminated funding for such a mission. It is the latest salvo in a two-year tussle over funding for a mission to Pluto, the only planet in the solar system that has never been directly observed by a robotic probe.
